Description Focusing on the verse “like a lamb led to slaughter… he did not open his mouth” Isiah 53:7, this image is a powerful reminder of peace during intense suffering. Jesus did not shy away from the worst moments of human life, not even until torture and death. And that’s not to compare our suffering and to say “it’s not as bad as Jesus’, so I shouldn’t complain” or some overly pious version of that. It’s to deeply realize that Jesus is right there with us in our suffering, right there with us in our pain. He knows all the sorrows of humanity. And through Him, He gives us the power to redeem our suffering by uniting it to His Cross, and transforming it into something life giving and fruitful. And in this image He’s peaceful, in the midst of suffering, He has a peace that transcends human understanding. And that peace is possible in our lives through Him. —– This sketch was part of a series that highlighted some of my favorite paintings and sculptures hidden in churches in Rome. Some are massive statues in St. Peter’s Basilica while others adorn quiet corners high up in the ceiling. Moments of prayer brought into a sketch, highlighting the contemplative nature of our Faith, listening to God’s voice in a whisper.
