Description Memento Mori – Remember your death. This is an ancient Catholic phrase, even used as a greeting between monks and nuns. Remember your death, remember that you will die. It’s recorded that some Saints would have a human skull on their desks to remind themselves of their Earthly death and as a reminder that any moment can be our last – so do not waste your days. In this still life, the skull rests on the black fabric and the rough hewn wood symbolic of our humanity and sin. The hourglass, out of time, reminds us that we will know not the day nor the hour of our death, but that it will be sooner than we expect. But that is not the end. In a dramatic contrast, the white box frames the scene. Heaven is always present; and our path to it: the Word of God. Will we choose the black path of sin and death, or choose the golden path of eternal life in Heaven?
