(SOLD) Study off Federico Barocci’s “Saint Francis”

Description On the Painting: This is a highly zoomed in study of Barocci’s Saint Francis painting. In the rest of it, Francis is gazing up at the crucifix, surrounded by the darkness of his cave in Assisi. A nail can be seen in his hand, a sign of the stigmata St. Francis received. Barocci has a way with color and shadow. Every color is muted, and yet there is a great breadth of color to be seen – almost the entire rainbow. His control of his brush and the paint marks him as one of the greatest painters of his time, leading into the Baroque period of Rubens. ——- This alla prima study is part of my training arc for painting the Litany of Loretto Marian series, which I’ve begun to develop on my Patreon! It cannot hang by itself, but will fit in most standard 5×7 frames.
