Description Diego Velazquez’s depiction of the Coronation of the Virgin is among my favorites. My painting of it is highly zoomed in just on Mary, but in the original painting God the Father can be seen on the right, and God the Son on the left. Velazquez’s loose style was a joy to imitate in this master copy – his brush strokes are all clearly seen and make up the majority of the changes in value and shape as opposed to a smooth, layered approach.His colors are vibrant, yet not overpowering, adding a regality and importance to the scene. Our Lady looks downward humbly, letting the focus be on God, but in this cropping of the painting we are left to meditate fully on her humility, a humility we are called to imitate on our journey to Heaven. ——- This alla prima study is part of my training arc for painting the Litany of Loretto Marian series, which I’ve begun to develop on my Patreon!
